Georgia crackdown
Published:  28 September, 2011

Georgia governor Nathan Deal has joined law enforcement and political leaders in announcing a statewide crackdown on sweepstakes video games, which they consider illegal. They estimate that up to 100 Internet cafes in Georgia offer sweepstakes video games, and Deal is concerned about the rapid growth of this market.

There is also a secondary but important worry for Deal. The Associated Press reported that Deal has acknowledged that sweepstakes video games have cut into the profits of the Georgia state lottery.

Neighbouring Florida has also gone after sweepstakes video games. In mid-August, sheriffs in Orlando, home of Walt Disney World and its sister theme parks, raided a sweepstakes location. They made two arrests and charged each defendant with 50 counts of operating an illegal gambling house and operating gambling devices.

Further north in Virginia Beach, an operator pled guilty to charges of running an illegal gambling organisation. He was part of a major raid a year ago against 11 individual sweeps games establishments.
