The king of game companies listed on the Taiwan stock market, MacroWell OMG Digital Entertainment (OMG), and China-based HNA Group are partnering to launch a cloud-based entertainment platform, YH Youth DreamNet.
They will also build YH Entertainment Mall, a new-style entertainment business which combines the virtual and real worlds.
The partnership with OMG marks HNA Group’s first penetration into the game sector, said Yu Ding, VP of HNA’s subsidiary YH Entertainment, who predicted that the new business would generate RMB200m-300m (€24m-36m) in revenue in 2012 based on a conservative estimate.
Yu Ding also said that YH Entertainment would build 300 to 500 entertainment malls over ten years. Scheduled to open by the end of 2011, the first YH Entertainment Mall will be focused on indoor recreation and also offer shopping and dining. A further eight to ten YH Entertainment Malls are planned to open in 2012.
OMG chief executive Calvin Lin, meanwhile, pointed out that Taiwanese game companies have been trying to develop business in the Chinese market for more than ten years but none has succeeded. However, he believed that through co-operation with China’s traditional industry, OMG could create a new business model.
Regarding the outlook for the online games industry, Lin said that although performance had been dull this year, he believed that more players would return and the worst was over. He expected to see recovery in the first or second quarter of 2012.
