Production begins this month on the Captivator 360 from Sound Leisure’s SLKids division, a new free-to-play system based on Microsoft’s Xbox and Kinect technology.
The Captivator 360 conceals the Xbox 360 console and Kinect sensor behind a standard flat-panel screen from 32 to 60 inches in diameter, to provide what the firm calls “a vandal-proof, controller-less gaming console which can be quickly installed by a single engineer”.
Although it was originally conceived for Sound Leisure’s SLKids range of children’s play equipment for four-to-12-year-olds, and will be marketed through that division, the firm has found it appealing to a much broader demographic.
Said Sound Leisure’s Mike Black: “Because the solution is free to play and very easy to use, the customer decision-making process is much simpler than with traditional games. We are seeing this translate through to really impressive customer engagement, including hard-to-reach groups such as females and the 40s-to-50s age group. By encouraging these groups to stay in venues longer we can bring huge benefits to businesses.”
