For the first time, thousands of contestants at the National Dart Association’s (NDA) annual Team Dart competition at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada will be prohibited from smoking on location.
A statewide smoking ban took effect on December 8, 2006. The ban prohibits smoking in most indoor public spaces except casino gaming areas. The Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights (ANR) claims that more than half of American citizens now live in jurisdictions that ban smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces. A total of 22 states and 577 municipalities now ban smoking in public places within in the US The current legal status is uncertain because of challenges filed by bar owners. A judge has ruled that only civil authorities-not police- may enforce the law, with a maximum fine of $100. Some Las Vegas casinos are continuing to allow indoor smoking, awaiting a final court decision before enforcing the ban. The Riviera will enforce the ban on their premises, despite the pending constitutional challenge. Team Dart XXII will be held from April 27 to May 5.
