UK golfing fans have swapped the greens for the pub by competing in the fifth Golden Tee Live World Championships. The highly popular video golf event organised by Electrocoin and The Spirit Group – the managed house division of the UK’s largest pub company, Punch Taverns – took place in over 50 pubs and attracted more than 400 competitors.
Two lucky winners, who fought off tough competition at the UK finals held at City Limits First Base Sports Bar in Romford, will now be given a swing at the big time by representing their country at the grand finals in Las Vegas. David Cooper from Formby and Phil Marsh from Leigh-on-Sea will join forces with Andy Wallis from Hemel Hempstead and Neil McGuinness from Alderley Edge – both of whom qualified from previous events held in all Golden Tee locations– to battle it out against video golf enthusiasts from around the world. Electrocoin Business Development Director Kevin Weir said: “We were thrilled at the response to the World Tee Live Championship, which really grabbed the attention of pub-goers throughout the UK. “Working closely with the Spirit Group we were able to organise a fantastic tournament which gave hundreds of video golf fans a shot at the last two places in the UK World Tee Live team. We congratulate all four winners and wish them the best of luck in Las Vegas.” The World Finals will take place at the Rio Hotel, Las Vegas on 26 and 27 March 2007, where the finalists will compete in both individual and team events. Weir added: “The growth of Golden Tee Live, spurred in part by its unique place in the UK tournament circuit, is encouraging, and is set to contribute considerably to the future success of Electrocoin. Through our on-screen advertising initiatives and bespoke gaming contests, we can offer excellent opportunities for working closely with our customers and alongside pub operators like the Spirit Group.” Head of the Spirit Group Leisure Machines team, Ken Mullarkey, said, “Our relationship with Electrocoin has gone from strength to strength. The Golden Tee Live tournament injected some excitement and competitive spirit in the participating pubs. “This high profile tournament enabled us to upgrade and install a greater number of Golden Tee Live machines, which not only proved beneficial to business during the busy Christmas and January trading period but have continued to be good income generators.” For more information on the tournament, visit www.goldentee.com.
