Calls for new law on internet gambling
Published:  01 November, 2007

The Senate Commission for Economic Affairs and Finance has asked the Government to work on a law to regulate the gaming and betting services provided via electronic media and, in particular, the Internet, and cited by way of reference the fact that other countries in the European Union already have legislation and standards in place to regulate this activity.

According to the Commission, the proposal is aimed at fighting against fraud since, at present, many bets related to gaming are being placed via the Internet or by mobile phone on systems run by foreign companies and in effect, this provides a fast and simple alternative to money laundering. On the other hand, according to the senators, the law must guarantee the user’s protection, warn of the risks of addiction, pay special attention to minors, and determine the competent body that is able to use all the legal instruments to freeze the activities of those who do not abide by the legislation on gaming or betting via the Internet or any other electronic channel. At the same time it emphasises that this law should be introduced as a matter of urgency since there are only a few more months before the elections, and also because it will be necessary to coordinate the law with all the autonomous governments concerned. In the meantime, the Government is urged to freeze the activities of these operators until the regulation governing this form of electronic and online media is passed.
