Games Media has secured a licence from New Line Cinema to develop pay-to-play games based on the movie The Golden Compass. The first of these to be released is ‘The Golden Compass’ SWP game which was released to the company’s IND:E estate last month, just in time for the UK debut of the expected holiday blockbuster on December 7th.
The game will also be made available to platform partners in line with specified menu release dates. The Golden Compass is a film adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and features a star-studded cast including: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and newcomer Dakota Blue Richards. With an estimated budget of $205m, the film is an exciting fantasy adventure, set in an alternative world where people’s souls manifest themselves as animals. At the centre of the story is Lyra who uses a magical golden compass to guide her through an epic quest to rescue a kidnapped friend and save her world and ours in the process. As in the film, at the heart of the game lies the Golden Compass, players must select three symbols, and the combination of which determines the challenge that will be presented to the player. This could be an observation puzzle, or a question on a specific subject and the player must complete each challenge to progress through the game. Utilising stunning graphics as used in the film production, the game will appeal to all, whether familiar with the story or not. Steve Murray, Chief Strategic Development Officer at Games Media commented, “We are delighted to have secured this exciting licence, further demonstrating Games Media’s ongoing commitment to creating compelling content and exciting games with maximum player appeal. New Line Cinema have been fantastic to work with and we look forward to releasing this game to market. As a company we are selective about licensed properties, pursuing only those we feel will enhance game playing experience, either through brand familiarity and trust or by presenting exciting game mechanic opportunities. We will be unveiling a range of exciting licensed games during 2008 in addition to innovative games designed and developed in-house. Creating games is one of our strengths, and remains at the very heart of our business.”
