Jon Sander (right) receives award from Jim McCann |
The Mary Openshaw Memorial Award For Excellence was inaugurated at Ireland's AmEx 2004 in memory of the late Mary Openshaw, the renowned journalist, based in Brussels, Belgium, who served the international amusement industry for over 35 years. The first recipient of the award was Eduardo Antoja, President of Euromat; the second was Mike Nevin, Managing Director of Namco Europe; the third was Hans Rosenzweig, former President of Euromat and the fourth recipient was well-known industry personality Shane Breaks.
Jon H. Sander is the recipient of the 2008 Mary Openshaw Memorial Award for Excellence. He has been associated with the coin-operated leisure industry since the beginning of the 1960s. Sander’s technical background, gained in Canada and America, helped him to get quickly established in this new field. At an ATE event held at the old Agricultural Hall in London, he met with Jim Moran who, under the banner of Moran's Music Company, was at that time the largest operator of arcades and single sites on the island of Ireland. Sander has great respect for his adopted country and appreciates the goodwill of his many friends throughout the land and in particular is humbled by being selected for the 2008 Mary Openshaw Memorial Award for Excellence. He extends his deep appreciation for the recognition bestowed upon him. He is actively involved in NIACTA - Northern Ireland Amusement Caterer's Trade Association, being the Hon. Secretary for the past 21 years. In that capacity he has been instrumental in helping to achieve numerous amendments to the Northern Ireland Gaming Legislation which has enhanced the industry as a whole. IGAA (Irish Gaming & Amusement Association) Secretary, Martin Dempsey said: "It is appropriate that we are presenting this award to Jon Sander, as his long and successful career in the amusement industry paralleled Mary's own career as a journalist in many ways. “The purpose of the award is to remind us of Mary's contribution to the international amusement industry as a journalist. The award itself is a piece of Irish crystal to remind us where Mary spent her retirement years. “Finally, this is an Award For Excellence - the excellence with which Jon Sander pursued a career in the amusement industry; the excellence which typified Mary's life and indeed the excellence which we seek in our own lives!" CAPTION Jim McCann, President of IGAA - Irish Gaming & Amusement Association, presents the fifth Mary Openshaw Memorial Award For Excellence to Jon Sander, Secretary of NIACTA - Northern Ireland Amusement Caterer's Trade Association, at AmEx 2008 in Dublin on 4 March. -- --
