Games back in Taipei City
Published:  09 July, 2008

During his term as Taipei City mayor, the former President of Taiwan - Chen Shui Bian cracked down on electronic games, causing positive and negative feedbacks from the public.  Now will games make a comeback?  The Taipei City Government passed the Electronic Game Locations Autonomous Regulation.

Operators can run game locations legally after they apply to the government. However, the Taipei City Government sets strict rules on games; ordinary game locations must be established at least 50 meters away from schools and hospitals; restricted game locations must be established at least kilometre away from schools. In fact, it is pretty much impossible for restricted game locations to be set up at all in Taipei City.

The current Taipei City mayor Hao Long Bin said, "The Supreme Administrative Court originally thinks that our orders for banning game locations, especially banning them according to distances, interferes with people's right for running businesses."  Last year the court judged that the crack-down by the former mayor Chen Shui Bian was illegal for there were no rules to follow.  As a result the Taipei City Government passed the Electronic Game Locations Autonomous Regulation quickly, specifying the conditions and rules for the installation of game machines.
