Fatal blow to harness racing in Balearics
Published:  04 September, 2008

The Government of the Balearic Islands has struck an almost fatal blow to the system that finances harness racing. The Consorcio del Juego Hípico de Mallorca, (the Majorcan Horse Racing Betting Consortium), chaired by the Minister of the Interior, Maria Ángeles Leciñena, approved the distribution of the profits derived from the Lototrot and Promotrot betting systems over the last two years and at the same time, registered the termination of the contract with the companies Cirsa SL and Troyjocs SL, charged with the operation and development of this kind of horse racing betting.

The decision of the Consorcio del Joc was expected by everyone after receiving a letter signed by Josep Vitó, manager of the company operating the Lototrot, driven by the Executive of the autonomous government, which warned that 'it would remove all machines in the coming days' if they persisted in refusing to observe that they can only be installed in a place that allows this business to be profitable: namely the bars and restaurants. "As up to now we have received no information regarding the possibility of obtaining approval for their installation in bars and cafes," says Vitó, "and being close to the expiry of the licence, on July 28th this year, this is why we are now informing you that assuming that the Balearic Government does not give such permission, then Cirsa Interactive Corp. S.L. - Troyjocs S.L. will not have their licence extended". The cause of all the problems stemming from this initiative - according to the licence holders - is the same as it has always been. "Where the sales are made today - tobacconists and bureaux de change offices - are not the most appropriate channels," said a source. "If the licence were for sales within the catering domain it would make it possible to recover some of these losses in the long run".
